What is the definition of Macro?

A macro environment is the global or national economy as a whole, rather than industry specific. This focuses on global financial, political and other assorted events. Many hedge funds, traders or asset managers operate on a 'Global Macro' basis, which means they make investment and trading decisions based on world events and take advantage of price changes relating to these events, rather than by value investing.

A macro is also a feature of Microsoft Excel which allows complex actions to be recorded and repeated infinite times, and this is extremely useful for data formatting.

Some useful macro shortcuts in Excel are:

  • Alt T + M + R - Start / stop recording macro
  • Alt T + M + M - View macros
