U.S Couple who Pointed Guns at Protesters of Black Lives Matter, to Speak at Republican Convention.
The U.S couple, Mark and
Patricia McCloskey who are homeowners in St. Louis came out of their home and
waved guns at protesters in their neighborhood, during their Black Lives Matter
protest in June as they marched past their mansion in St. Louis on June 28.
The protesters who were
in their neighborhood were on their way to the home of Mayor Lyda Krewson, the
protest was to push for her resignation as her actions, which saw her disclosing
the names and addresses of people who were advocating for a defunding of the
police provoked activists.
The confrontation between
the McCloskey’s and about 500 protesters drew much attention, though no one was
hurt in the process. Their action also saw them being charged with the unlawful
use of weapons. A Class E felony that can carry a prison sentence of up to four
years.
Kim Gardner, St Louis'
first black circuit attorney, said “It is illegal to wave weapons in a
threatening manner at those participating in non-violent protest,”
Mark McCloskey in a bid
to defend his action said he was in imminent fear that they would run him over
and kill him.
He was also reported by
CNN to have said “I was a person scared for my life, protecting my wife, my
home, my hearth, my livelihood. I was a victim of a mob that came through the
gate” He added that it is ridiculous to consider him the face of opposition to
the Black Lives Matter movement after the incident.
He also said “I didn’t
care what color they were. I didn’t care what their motivation was,” he said.
“I was frightened. I was assaulted.”
The couple will be
speaking at the Republican National Convention which would be taking place
between the 24 – 27 August, in North Carolina. Their lawyer, Albert Watkins said,
Patricia McCloskey is not expected to speak but she will be at her husband’s
side.
Hundreds of delegates are
expected to attend the Republican National Convention and they will be casting proxy
votes for over a thousand others who won’t be physically present at the convention
and they will formally nominate Donald Trump as the party’s presidential candidate
for the election that is coming up in November.
At the convention, it was
reported that the couple will show their support for Donald Trump. President
Trump was also perceived to be in support of the couple during the case they
were involved in, but this can’t be seen to be the reason for them standing
behind him.
According to CNN, the Republican
convention will also have speakers, which include, Covington Catholic student
Nick Sandmann, Andrew Pollack, the father of Parkland shooting victim Meadow
Pollack, anti-abortion activist Abby Johnson, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and
Pennsylvania congressional candidate Sean Parnell.
For the Democrats, they
kicked off their convention on Monday, with speakers like Michelle Obama,
Senator Bernie Sanders, and a Republican in the person of John Kasich, former
Governor of Ohio, all speaking virtually.
