On Wednesday, the United States of America sent its congratulations to Nigeria on the victory of Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the APC, while also issuing a plea for calm in the face of allegations of voting fraud and worries over technological issues.
Ned Price, a spokesperson for the State Department, issued the following statement: "The United States of America congratulates the people of Nigeria, president-elect Tinubu, and all of the political leaders."
According to the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Tinubu, the candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), received 8.8 million votes, while Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the two main candidates representing the opposition, received 6.9 million and 6.1 million votes, respectively.
Price noted the concern that exists among some Nigerians over the authenticity of the results, particularly in light of the fact that at least one opposition has stated their intention to challenge the outcome.
"We recognize that many Nigerians, as well as some of the parties, have voiced unhappiness with the manner in which the process was done," he stated. "We are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused."
"Nigerians are clearly within their rights to have such concerns and should have high expectations for their electoral process," Price said, urging political leaders to register their concerns through established legal "mechanisms." "Nigerians are clearly within their rights to have such concerns and should have high expectations for their electoral process," Price said. “The election officials in Nigeria had thought that with the introduction of new biometric voter identification technology, the election would be the cleanest one to date; nevertheless, technical difficulties, lengthy delays, and delayed results have fed charges of fraud.”
Price made the following statement: "We ask on all sides to refrain from violence or harsh speech at this critical moment."
