Shalanda Young confirmed as the U.S. deputy director of the OMB
The U.S. Senate has confirmed the appointment of Shalanda Young as the deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
Young’s appointment was confirmed after a 67-37 vote after receiving bipartisan support from members of Congress. This appointment would make Young the first Black woman to lead the OMB.
Before now, Young served as the Democratic Staff Director. She will now serve as the acting chief of the OMB until President Joe Biden finds a worthy replacement for Neera Tanden. Both Democrats and Republicans have refused to confirm Tanden due to previous statements she made on social media.
The battle to run the OMNB is between two major minority groups in America. Black lawmakers are pushing for Young to lead the OMNB full-time. While Asian-Americans are rooting for Nani Coloretti to be confirmed as the OMNB chief. The Asian-American group believes that President Biden’s cabinet could use more representation of Asian Americans.
Several weeks ago, Young received endorsements from Majority Whip Jim Clyburn and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“As longtime Members of the Appropriations Committee, we take great pride in recommending Shalanda Young as Director of the Office of Management and Budget,” the group wrote in a statement. We have worked closely with her for several years and highly recommend her for her intellect, her deep expertise on the federal budget, and her determination to ensure that out budget reflects our values as a nation. Her legislative prowess, extensive knowledge of federal agencies, incisive strategic mind and proven track record will be a tremendous asset to the Biden-Harris Administration.”
