Pelosi, Schumer, and others call for Trump’s resignation after an attack on Capitol
Following Wednesday’s attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters, top Democrats in Congress – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D - Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D -NY) and others have called for the immediate removal of President Donald Trump. They gave two options of either impeaching the President or removal from office by his Cabinet.
“By inciting sedition as he did yesterday, he must be removed from office. While there are only 13 days left, any day could be a horror show for America,” Pelosi told Capitol Hill reporters.
The riot on Wednesday was without any doubt incited by the President’s refusal to accept the election results. Rioters stormed the Capitol Building in an attempt to prevent Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’s election victory. This action was supported by Trump who later commended the supporters and fans of his administration that led the riot.
Schumer described the attack on Capitol as “an insurrection against the United States, incited by the president.”
Trump was unable to immediately respond to the attacks on the Capitol due to his temporal ban from social media. In a two-and-a-half-minute video release on Thursday evening. He acknowledged that the outrage was lawless and mayhem. He said, “tempers must be cooled.” Trump officially called on the nation to be calm and assured that there would be a “smooth, orderly, seamless transition of power” on January 20 as a new administration comes into office.
“Serving as your president has been the honor of my lifetime,” he said, implying that he has admitted defeat and was ready to pass on power to President-elect Joe Biden.
To show disapproval of the violent attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced their resignation with barely two weeks left in the administration.
“There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation,” DeVos said in a letter.
Republican Congress members who initially planned to object the election results of certain states to prevent the certification of Biden and Kamala, went back on their decision after the attack. Former President Barack Obama applauded them for their decision to put America first.
“I’ve been heartened to see many members of the President’s party speak up forcefully today. Their voices added to the examples of the Republican state and local elections officials in states like Georgia who’ve refused to be intimidated and have discharged their duties honorably,” Obama said in a statement. “We need more leaders like these – right now in the days, weeks, and months ahead as President-Elect Biden works to restore a common purpose to our politics.”
US Lawmakers also probed the Capitol Police for failing to keep the building secure from the rioters. After Congress demanded accountability from the security officials in charge of the complex, head of the Capitol Police and the sergeant at arms for the House and Senate resigned. The lawmakers from both sides of the chambers have said that further investigation into the Capitol police will be conducted to know why the Police were easily overpowered by the rioters.
