The plan for the removal of fuel subsidy which has been causing unrest in the minds of Nigerians has also gained positive views as representatives of the Federal Government are said to meet with Labour Congress this Wednesday, the 31st of May 2023 at exactly 2 pm to have talks concerning the removal of fuel subsidy which have increased the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) after the declaration of Bola Tinubu as the new president of Nigeria.
This news came in after a media briefing with the NLC National President, Joe Ajaero where he disclosed that in that same interview he had with Channels Television on Wednesday. He also added that measures were available to ease the process even if Bola Tinubu have good intentions for the people of Nigeria.
Joe Ajaero further condemned the president for taking such steps without looking at the implications that will cause for the citizens who are at the receiving end of the verdict.
The NLC boss listed some alternatives which he stated in the interview at Channels Television; he said that the revitalization of the nation’s four refineries, and the provision of transportation of the alternatives for the Nigerian workers will be safer than removing subsidy completely.
“The pronouncement by Mr President is as good as law and if in the process we make a law that is not practicable, the same people that made the law can look at it,” Ajaero said while calling for a review of the President’s pronouncement.
“Does it bring pleasure to us to say subsidy is gone and people start suffering? Is it not part of leadership for us to look at how the suffering of the people can be reduced?” he asked.
However, the Nigerian National Population Company Limited said that the country was spending over N400bn monthly on subsidy.
No words about the meeting held about the removal of subsidy, but Joe Ajaero before leaving the interview he had with Channels Television urged Nigerians to be patient with the system and that there will be a way out sooner.
The organized labour comprising of the Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress described the move by Tinubu as a “joke taken too far”.
It is expected that Today’s meeting will provide a lasting solution to the situation on the ground.
