The National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), Mr. Vincent Olatunji, revealed that Nigeria's data protection industry has emerged as a major contributor to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). With approximately 500,000 data-generating bodies in the country, each requiring Data Protection officers, the Data Protection Bill aims to address breaches and ensure compliance with legal parameters.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC)

To reinforce the focus on data protection, the bill proposes the establishment of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC). Currently, the NDPB handles data protection responsibilities under the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The NDPC, as an independent body, will assume critical functions such as deploying technological measures to enhance personal data protection, promoting awareness among data controllers and processors, and fostering the development of personal data protection technologies in line with international best practices and applicable laws.
