On Tuesday, the Tin-Can Island command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) revealed that it has generated N716 billion from goods that will be imported into the country in 2023. Breaking down the earnings and giving a target for 2024, the Command's Customs Area Controller in Lagos, Comot. Dera Nnadi says that the command targets N1.130 trillion in 2024.
According to him, the command must generate over N94 billion weekly to achieve such tasks. He further stated that the target was achievable even though the command has tagged 2024 as a stakeholder.
He said,
The command is expected to generate a total of N1.130 trillion, that is, N94.230 million, daily. The command is expected to generate N21.666 billion weekly.
Analysing the previous year's performance, Nnadi maintained that the command had deployed different capacities for officers and stakeholders as one of the tools to achieve its mandate.
He added that the deployment of ICT has also assisted the command in optimising its efficiency in the past year, even as he maintained that more structures in the system would be applied for better efficiency in the new year.
He also said that 24-hour and weekend port operations were implemented in the previous year.
Speaking further, Compt. Nnadi applauded the officers of the command as well as stakeholders for their cooperation in generating the massive sum in 2023.
He added,
We have decided that 2024 will be a year of stakeholders on Tincan Island. But we will not hesitate to deal decisively with those unwilling to change.
He is, therefore, calling on Nigerians to encourage the export of goods, which he believes will grow the nation's economy.
He said that aside from revenue collection, the command is poised to prioritise stakeholder engagement and regular sensitisation exercises to promote trade facilitation.
