Netflix wants you to stop sharing your password with others. Password sharing on streaming sites, especially subscription-based ones, is hardly a new trend. This is when multiple people use the same account to stream from different devices, usually with just one of the users paying for the subscription.
In research by ESET 60% of respondents admitted to sharing their streaming service details with multiple people. Netflix is making moves to make password sharing more secure for its users. It is currently testing a new step, which aims to prove that password sharers are doing so with permission from the owner of the said account by requiring them to verify login via email or text.
According to Netflix, "This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so." Netflix has a plan which costs $13.99 and allows users to stream on two screens at once. In its last quarterly report released, Netflix reported having over 200 million subscribers.
At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, it gained 26 million subscribers before the end of June. Stopping the share of passwords might make Netflix lose more subscribers to the competition as more streaming companies like HBO, Hulu, Amazon Prime emerge.
