On Tuesday, MultiChoice Nigeria, a satellite TV provider announced via text message that there would be a 17% increase on the prices of all its DStv and GOtv packages. They confirmed in a text message sent to customers that the new rates will take effect come May 1st and that this new increase in price is as a result of the rising rate of inflation and cost of operating business in Nigeria.
Here’s what the company said in an internal memo:
“Due to the various economic challenges impacting our business operations, we have had to review the price of our packages to continue delighting our customers with great entertainment, anytime and anywhere.”
“MultiChoice acknowledges the difficult economic climate and thus kept the increase at the lowest possible point whilst ensuring sustainability and provision of quality services.”
”At MultiChoice Nigeria, our mission is to deliver value to our customers by making great entertainment accessible. Our key priority is to put our customer’s needs at the heart of everything we do,”
Although this new development is not without its downsides, It is clear that the company has acknowledged the price increments and stated their reasons, also explaining that they still intend to provide the best quality of services to their customers.
THE PRICE INCREMENTS:
•The DStv Premium package will see a price increase of ₦3,500 or 16.7%, going from ₦21,000 to ₦24,500.
•The DStv Compact+ package will be increased by ₦2,350 or 16.5%, jumping from ₦14,250 to ₦16,600. Similarly, the DStv Compact package will go from N9,000 to ₦10,500, a ₦1,500 or 16.7% increase.
•The DStv Confam package, currently priced at ₦5,300, will see a 17% increment to ₦6,200. •The DStv Yanga package will get a ₦550 boost from ₦2,950 to ₦3,500, equivalent to 18.6%.
•Lastly, the DStv Padi package will increase from ₦2,150 to ₦2,500, a difference of ₦350 or 16.3%.
Despite the rate increases, MultiChoice Nigeria has made a price lock offer to subscribers who may wish to renew their subscriptions before their due dates.
The offer, which is meant to lessen the impact of the price review, allows customers to pay the old rates for 12 months, if they pay monthly before the expiration of their subscriptions.
Many satellite Tv subscribers rely on it for their day to day entertainment and it is without a doubt that these new prices are set to have certain impacts on their choices. Some users understand that MultiChoice Nigeria truly is facing challenges like the cost of operating business and a corresponding need for the increment of prices, but other customers have mixed reactions including disappointment and even anger. It remains to be seen how the effects of this new development will unfold.
