Meet the Nigerian Medical Student who made history at a Russian University

Nigerians are gradually gaining popularity for record-breaking achievements around the globe. Young Nigerian medical student, Chukwudi Olewuezi recently made it to the list of extraordinary Nigerians around the world.

Olewuezi set a record in Siberian State Medical University by scoring high marks as he concluded his medical degree. He graduated with a 5.0 CGPA in a 5.0 grading system, he told PUNCH Online.

His journey began in his high school, Air Force Comprehensive School, Enugu, Nigeria, where he scored high marks. Unfortunately, he was unable to secure admission into a Nigerian university despite his high scores in the national qualifying exams.

Olewuezi’s story is quite relatable to many Nigerian high school graduates who find it very challenging securing admission into Nigerian Universities. Many have spent many unreasonable years seeking admission into the University while those fortunate enough end up traveling abroad or attending private universities.

“I had always wanted to study abroad and obviously make something of myself back in Air Force Comprehensive School, Enugu,” he told Ghanaweb. “So after failing to gain admission twice even with JAMB scores 247 and 260, respectively, I decided to study abroad… after talking with a Russian-trained medical doctor, Dr. Okere.”

On arrival in Russia, Olewuezi first attended the Tomsk Polytechnic University where he studied the Russian language and some science subjects in the Russian language. He then moved on to the Siberia State Medical University still in Tomsk.

He admitted that mathematics and further mathematics were not his strong points and opted for Human Anatomy during his JAMB examination. However, following his mother’s advice, he opted for medicine.

“I sought my mother’s advice, and she said why not go for medicine, that I shouldn’t be scared of anything. I was scared of the competition though. And ever since then I’ve been thinking about becoming an oncologist.”

The young Nigerian owes his success to his mother who believes in quality education and went out of her way to give Olewueze and his two siblings quality education.
