LeBron James, Patrick Mahomes and more Stars, Sign Letter Against Voter Suppression.
NBA Star, LeBron James,
Patrick Mahomes, Sloane Stevens, and a lot of other athletes have all teamed up
to sign a letter with More Than A Vote that will help fight against voter suppression
in the coming elections for 2020.
The letter which is said
to have been addressed to fans of every age, race, and gender, read; “We saw
you in the streets. We saw your social media posts. Your voices are breaking
through, but it's now time to do more,” the letter stated. “We know you have
the ability to organize. So join us and take your protest to the election and
fight to keep our community from being silenced. The most important thing
you all need to know is Black voters matter more than ever.”
The group “More Than A Group”
which is led by LeBron James, with the backing of a list of high-ranking
athletes and entertainers was introduced in June, is aimed at getting more African
Americans to the pools.
An announcement was made
last week by the group, to make it known that it was collaborating with the Los Angeles Dodgers to make the Dodger Stadium a polling site for the elections
which will be coming up in November.
With this partnership, it
would be the first time a Major League Baseball team is offering their stadium to
be used as a center to carry out voting activities.
In the letter which was
issued on Monday, “the non-profit organization said one solution that More Than
A Vote is working on is to convert as many arenas and sports facilities as
possible into voting precincts.”
James who leads the organization
revealed that the organization was formed as a result of the current struggles,
and it was set up to combat issues such as police brutality, social injustice
and other racial issues which were brought to light with the death of George
Floyd, a 46-year-old African American who was treated unfairly and killed as a
police officer pinned him down, kneeling on his neck.
“This all came together
during the protests against police brutality…All of us were angry, which we
still are, and wanted to do something with real impact right now. We didn’t
want to talk about it. We organized around voter suppression in our community
because it’s very real and if we want actual change, it’s going to start by
educating, energizing, and protecting Black voters in 2020.”
Some other athletes which
were involved in signing the letter include, Allyson Felix, Emmanuel Acho, Ray
Allen, Jozy Altidore, Tim Anderson, Mo Bamba, Odell Beckham Jr., Eric Bledsoe,
Toni Braxton, Bun B, Caron Butler, Carlton Davis, Skylar Diggins, Jeremy
Ebobisse, Mike Evans, Draymond Green, Brittney Griner, Kevin Hart, Udonis
Haslem, Andrew Hawkins, Jason Heyward, DeAndre Hopkins, Alvin Kamara, Damian

David Price, Jalen Rose, CC Sabathia, Ben Simmons, Marcus Stroman, Maria
Taylor, Kristi Toliver, Michael Vick, Bobby Wagner, A’ja Wilson, and Trae

Renee Montgomery who plays
for the Atlanta Dream said: “We’re in a unique position to energize and speak
directly to young Black people about the importance of voting in this election
and we can give them the tools to fight back against the forces that want to
prevent them from doing so.”
