Early life

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born on June 17, 1987, in Compton, California. Lamar's family was so poor that he spent most of his early life as a street boy.  However, rather than allow the life in the street to cause havoc to his life, he learned from it and motivated himself to be what he is today. 

In Compton, Lamar attended McNair Elementary and Centennial High School and performed really well. While growing up, he loves writing poems and stories. His passion for writing contributed to his success today.

At age 16, Lamar nicknamed himself K-Dot and released his first mix-tape, titled Youngest Head Nigga in Charge. The song made a huge turnout and became his first step into becoming a renowned rapper. Following the success of his mix-tape, he got a deal with an indie record label, Top Dawg Entertainment in California. 

He released two other mix-tapes in 2005 and 2009 named Training Day and C4 respectively. In the industry, he made friends with other upcoming artists and formed a club of hip-hop singers known as Black Hippy. Not long, he dropped his stage name and started using his birth name. 

After releasing his fourth mixtape " Overly Dedicated, he launched his first studio album in 2011 titled Section 80. Aside from his deal with Dr. Dre’s company and Reeboks, Lamar has not partnered with any other company. In an interview with Forbes in 2013, he said rather than pursue endorsements as a way of making quick wealth, he would rather focus on creating more music.
