The founder and Chief Executive Officer of Amazon.com, Jeff Bezos has
once again proved to us that he isn’t called the World’s richest man for
nothing. This time around, he has gone ahead to spend a whooping sum of $165
million, which is approximately 0.13% of his net worth.
An anonymous source quite familiar with the matter disclosed that the
billionaire agreed to pay the sum of $165 million for a mansion comfortably
sitting on nine acres of land at Beverly Hills. The acquisition of the property
has set a record for real estate in Los Angeles. The news of the acquisition of
the mansion was first reported by the Wall Street Journal in the early hours of
Wednesday, Feb. 19.
The Beverly Hills property was reportedly designed in the 1930s for
Hollywood film mogul, Jack Warner. Describing the property, Architectural
Digest in 1992 said it is the “archetypal studio mogul’s estate.” The mansion
was built in the Georgian style and has expensive terraces and a nine-hole golf
course.
Bloomberg wrote:
“News of the sale emerged just days after filings showed Bezos cashed
out $4.1 billion of Amazon shares and comes amid reports
that he’s also entered the art market. He reportedly set a
record for artist Ed Ruscha at a Christie’s auction with a $52.5 million purchase of “Hurting the Word Radio #2”
in November and also bought “Vignette 19” by Kerry James Marshall for $18.5 million.”
Prior to the acquisition by Jeff Bezos, the property reportedly belonged
to David
Geffen since 1990, after he paid the sum of $47.5 million. Bloomberg further reported that Bezos was
seen socializing on the entertainment mogul’s mega-yacht last summer, visible in an Instagram post with girlfriend Lauren
Sanchez and Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s former chief, Lloyd Blankfein.
Several real estate agents have come forward to reveal that Bezos has
been looking to acquire an estate for some months now. A realtor, Josh Flagg in
an interview said he usually got a call “at least once a month from different
agents asking if I have something.”
The acquisition of the mansion was added to a string of mega-deals for
high-end residential properties since the beginning of 2019. This mansion also
adds to the string of properties owned by the billionaire. He reportedly owns
several homes including a mansion in Washington D.C., where he treated elites
to a party. He also owns 420,000 acres Texas desert scrub.
It was reported that he spent $24.45
million in 2007 for a Spanish-style estate in Beverly Hills; and acquired the
house next door for $12.9 million in 2017. In 2019, Bezos bought some
apartments worth $80 million in New York City. Other real estate properties
linked to Bezos exist in Seattle, Texas and Washington D.C.
With reference to a 2019 Land Report,
Bezos is ranked one of US’ 100 largest landowners based on the number of Acres.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires
Index, Bezos’ current net worth stands at $131.9 billion.
