Nigeria's Joint Admissions & Matriculation Board (JAMB)

Nigerian universities' admission examinations are administered by the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB). For candidates applying to undergraduate programs in Nigerian universities, the board administers the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. Additionally, the board is responsible for conducting comparable tests for candidates for admission to Nigerian public and private polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of education. All of these applicants must have earned a West Africa School Certificate, or WASC, currently known as the West African Examinations Council, or NECO, Nigeria's equivalent.

Up until 2010, JAMB held two distinct exams for candidates seeking admission to Nigeria's higher education institutions. For applicants seeking admission to any Nigerian institution, the University Matriculation Examination (UME) was the initial test. The second was the Matriculation Examination for Monotechnics, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education (MPCEME). Candidates seeking admission to Nigeria's monotechnics, polytechnics, or colleges of education were invited to take this test.

These two exams are currently consolidated into one by JAMB and are known as the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). All applicants to Nigerian universities, polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of education must take the UTME.

JAMB Cut-off Mark for 2022/2023 Session

The JAMB Cut-Off for the UTME is the minimum score an applicant must obtain in the JAMB (UTME) exam in order to be eligible to participate in their selected school's post-UTME screening exercise. There are two different kinds of JAMB cut-off marks: departmental cut-off points and the general JAMB cut-off mark.

JAMB has declared 150 and above as the most recent cut-off mark for admission to all federal, state, and private universities in Nigeria as well as 130 for polytechnics and 120 for colleges of education.

To be eligible for admission in 2022–2023, you must achieve the JAMB cut-off mark of 150. This further implies that in order to purchase your school's Post UTME form and be eligible for consideration for admission in 2022, you must either score exactly 150 or higher.

Why do tertiary institutions still conduct entry exams after the UTME?

The primary responsibility of JAMB in the admissions process is to guarantee that applicants are treated equally and that institutions adhere to their established admissions requirements. The JAMB CAPS helps to ensure that all Tertiary institutions follow what they have said in their different brochures.

An applicant does not necessarily qualify for admission to any institution just because they received a good JAMB UTME score. Such a candidate must also satisfy any additional requirements or requirements imposed by the university they chose. These requirements include post-UTME screening, O'level results, and the ratio of science to arts, among others. Depending on the standards established by your institution, the JAMB CAPS will validate that you satisfy these prerequisites.
