Is Zenith Bank the Biggest Bank in Nigeria?


Zenith Bank Plc was founded in May 1990 and started running as a commercial bank in July of the same year. Following a very successful initial public offering, the Bank was transformed into a public limited company on June 17, 2004, and on October 21, 2004, it was listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). Nigeria's largest bank by tier-1 capital, Zenith Bank Plc, now has a shareholder base of over 500,000. In 2013, the Bank listed shares on the London Stock Exchange for $850 million at a price of $6.80 per share.


Zenith Bank Plc, which has its headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria, has more than 500 branches and corporate offices in prominent business districts across all of the federation's states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The Financial Services Authority (FSA) of the United Kingdom granted Zenith Bank a license in March 2007 to create Zenith Bank (UK) Limited as the country's branch of Zenith Bank Plc.

 

Additionally, Zenith Bank has subsidiaries in Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Gambia under the names Zenith Bank (Sierra Leone) Limited and Zenith Bank (Ghana) Limited. The People's Republic of China is home to the bank's representative office. Along with the European and Asian markets, the Bank intends to expand the Zenith brand into additional African nations.

In June 2022, Zenith Bank reported a market capitalization of 681.3 billion dollars, based on the most recent stock price and the total number of shares outstanding.


The Number 1 Tier-1 Bank in Nigeria 


Tier 1 capital, which indicates capital sufficiency, is the primary indicator of a bank's financial strength. Tier 1 Capital includes loss-absorbing capital, such as common stock, reported reserves, retained profits, and minority holdings in the equity of subsidiaries that are not entirely owned, as defined by the most recent Bank for International Settlements (BIS) criteria.


According to Tier-1 Capital's ranking in The Banker Magazine's 2021 Top 1000 World Banks Ranking, Zenith Bank Plc is the best bank in Nigeria. The bank emerged as the 454th bank worldwide and the only Nigerian bank in the top 500, maintaining its position as the top Tier-1 bank in Nigeria for the third consecutive year with a Tier-1 Capital of $2.64 billion.

 

The rating, which appeared in the July 2021 issue of The Banker Magazine published by the Financial Times Group in the UK, was based on the global Tier-1 capital of banks as of the end of the 2020 fiscal year. The financial success of Zenith Bank for the year was supported by an 8% increase in non-interest revenue and an increase in market share in both the retail and corporate markets.
