Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly growing and it is poised to revolutionize various industries including finance, media, and entertainment. However, parents are beginning to worry about its safety and potential harm to kids.
Firstly what is artificial intelligence?
Imagine all the tasks people perform daily, cooking, writing painting, chatting, and so many others. Now imagine machines trained them to do it faster and more accurately. That machine is powered by and known as artificial intelligence or simply AI.
How powerful is AI
According to Time Magazine, AI is set to replace over 15 million routine jobs in less than 20 years. Artificial Intelligence is powered by what is known as machine learning, and it is fed large amounts of data and trained in deep learning to work efficiently and learn while doing it. Makes one imagine what AI would learn in 20 years.
It is already being used in self-driving cars, virtual assistants, and chatbots. Its results have been more positive than not.
so why is AI not safe for Kids?
Well AI learns by collecting information or data from its users to better improve itself, and children living their usual carefree life can give out a lot of information innocently and parents can't predict what an AI will use it for.
Some AI safety concerns issues.
1. Criminal minds who know their way around AI can easily use this information for identity theft, online scams, and cyberbullying.
2. AI dependence may slow down social and emotional interaction for kids which can hinder the psychological development of a child.
3. The Fear of Rogue AI: at the moment AI systems are still under the watchful eyes of their makers and it is been monitored for rogue activities. But as competition persists, a lot can happen, plus we've seen enough SI-FI movies to believe it is possible.
4. Inaccuracy of AI responses: information given by AI is more times than not inaccurate or not up to date. This might keep children and their parents not properly informed of events and accurate reports.
What do AI Experts Think
AI tools and apps meant for Kids are expected to be designed with more security consciousness and the highest privacy standards possible.
In the recent World Economic Forum supported by UNICEF, experts believe AI for kids is safe if the kids and their parents on how to use them.
Also, young people should be trained in critical thinking first before allowing them access to AI tools.
AI has come to stay. It is already been infused into children's development in form of apps providing personalized training for children by suggesting solutions to where kids need help based on information provided by experts and other professional suggestions from parents, teachers, and therapists as needs be.
It is pertinent to note that parents should choose personally train their kids over leaving them at the mercy of AI because AI still needs training, and experts continue to develop solutions to burning AI issues.
Until it is safe, it is probably not safe.
