Microsoft Office
competitor Google G Suite is officially rebranding to Google Workspace.
The announcement was made
on Tuesday by Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc. The company said that the
Google G Suite – which includes productivity apps such as Gmail, Docs, Drive,
and Calendar – will be rebranded as Google Workspace with new pricing tiers.
According to the
Alphabet, the new name better reflects what the brand is all about by showing
how various applications like Google Meet are linked to other applications like
Google Docs.
The rebranding is
expected to help Google increase its revenue and become a better competitor to
Microsoft’s Office 365 applications which are more popular among businesses and
organizations. According to Gartner, an industry-research expert, Microsoft
dominated the email ad document authoring software market by 87.6% in 2019.
While Google only dominated 11.5%, up from 10.5% in the year before.
Google’s consumer
services such as Gmail and Google Drive are also popular among businesses and
organizations. As a result, the company has sought more ways to increase the
popularity of its other products and services, especially in schools,
companies, and nonprofits.
The new Google Workspace
will retain the Basic and Business versions of G Suite. They will now be
available as Business Starter and Business Standard plans and cost slightly
different from the previous $6 and $12 per month. A new option called the
Business Plus will also be included, which will come with greater security
features and cost $18 per month for each user. A new Essentials tier is also
available for tier teams and departments at $8 per month for each user.
According to Javier
Soltero, the vice president and general manager of Google Workspace, the new
offering will “translate into much more value to customers, for sure.” He has
also assured the public that Google has no plans to reduce support for
third-party apps in Google Workspace such as Zoom, Asana, Slack, etc.
“By selecting Google
Workspace, we get the brand association with Google, which is really important
to us, Soltero said. “These products are flagship for Google itself – and the
ability to actually describe the product in the same way, whether it’s to a
buyer or to a user.”
In addition to the
rebranding, Google is also rebranding the logos of the Workspace services to
use all the colors on the main Google logo to make all the services feel more
integrated with each other. New features will be added as well. For instance,
Google Chat users will be allowed to create documents from within their text conversations.
