General Motors on Tuesday night unveiled its latest project, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV sport utility truck, or SUT. The automaker described the vehicle as the ‘world’s first supertruck’.
Like the other GM Hummer trucks, the new electric Hummer will be as effective. The major difference between this new Hummer and the older models is that it will run on sustainable battery, instead of gas. The 2020 GMC Hummer EV also has new features including new technologies and exotic performance to support the EV maker’s claim of calling the truck a “supertruck.”
“This is all about people who just love the best automotive innovation, performance, capability, and technology,” said Duncan Aldred, GMC Vice President. “These are the people who you may have seen buy the exotic sports car type brands. This will be the must-have item.”
According to GM the EV will have the performance of an exotic sports car and will run on zero to 60 mph in 3 seconds. It will also possess off-road capability “that’s second to none” and a fast charge of up to 100 miles of range in only 10 minutes. The new EV will also feature several new technologies such as the next-generation driver-assist system which allows the driver to activate hands-free driving on highways.
The company estimates that the Hummer sport utility truck, or SUT, will hit more than 350 miles of electric range, and best-in-class 1,000 horsepower, with 11,500 lb.-ft. of torque. The vehicle will be the first of its kind that will possess GM’s next-generation EV platform and batteries.
“We had one goal for Hummer EV: Build the most capable factory truck-ever,” said Al Oppenheiser, GMC Hummer EV chief engineer, in a statement. “It’s an absolute off-road beast with a unique e4WD drive system that provides maneuverability, unlike anything GM has ever offered before.”
This new exotic Hummer doesn’t come at a cheap price as the initial availability pickup next fall will start at $112,595. The price will include destination charges for the launch version, the “Edition 1”. By the following year, a $99,995 version will be available, then the $89,995 and $79,995 versions by the spring of 2023 and 2024, respectively.
To help simplify the manufacturing launch of the Hummer EV, all vehicles of the “Edition 1” versions or initial models will be fully equipped and identically appointed, according to General Motors. All the vehicles will feature white interiors and each, a unique “Lunar Horizon” interior design, and a special “Edition 1” badging in the interior.
The new GM electric truck is set to compete against other big-name EV makers such as Tesla, Ford, and Rivian. GM’s production timeframe may give it enough time to work on the vehicle’s profitability goal, as well as to ramp up production with LG Chem for cell battery production. However, it may also give chance to competitors to storm the market with less expensive electric trucks. Tesla and Rivian are both expected to have staring prices for the Cybertruck and R1T below GM’s Hummer EV next year.
The GM Hummer EV will be manufactured at the company’s Detroit factory, called “Factory Zero” which is an indication of the company’s aim towards zero-emission vehicles.
