In less than a week, two shootings have occurred in the United States: first in Atlanta, and second in Boulder. It has been a dark moment for both cities.
The deadly shootings at King Soopers grocery store Boulder, Colo., on Monday, left at least 10 people dead, including a police officer, Eric Talley, 51.
A police officer told ABC News that the police department had immediately responded to a report of a shooting at the parking lot of the grocery store. Talley was the first officer to arrive at the scene, the suspect holding a long gun, opened fire on Talley and others there.
After a few shots exchanged between the police officers and the suspect, he was wounded in the process and taken into police custody, according to Boulder Police Department Commander Kerry Yamaguchi.
“Our hearts … go out to the victims of this horrific incident,” said Maris Herold, Boulder Police Chief. “Officer Talley responded to the scene, was the first on the scene, and he was fatally shot.”
He praised Talley for his “heroic action” in promptly responding to the reports after the police department received the phone calls.
Shortly after the shootings, several other law enforcement agencies, including the SWAT team, arrived at the scene. Yagamuchi told reporters that without the prompt response from law enforcers, there would have been probably more deaths recorded.
The commander and Boulder District Attorney Micahel Micahel Dougherty told reporters that more information on the deceased victims will be released in a couple of hours after their identities have been verified and their families contacted.
“Boulder has suffered a terrible and horrific mass shooting today … this is not the first mass shooting that we have had in the state of Colorado,” Doughtery said. “My heart goes out to Eric Talley’s family, his loved ones and his colleagues. His life was cut far too short. I also want to stress how incredibly sorry I am for all the victims killed today at the King Soopers.”
Yagamuchi revealed that the suspect was in police custody and was sent to an area hospital to have his injuries treated while he awaits questioning. He said the motive for the shootings hasn’t been determined, and there were no additional suspects yet.
Exactly a week ago, a gunman opened fire and killed 8 people at three spas in Atlanta. Six of the deceased victims were females of Asian origin. The Atlanta shootings are believed to be targeted towards Asians in America, another act of racism stirring up in the U.S. There is no telling if there is a long list of Asian spas and massage parlors under threat.
Although the motive for the Colorado shootings is yet to be determined, the police determined racial bias to be the motive for the Atlanta shootings.
