Disney’s Moana 2 Shatters Box Office Records
Key Highlights
Moana 2 achieved the highest five-day opening in history, earning an estimated $221 million domestically from Wednesday to Sunday.
The film surpassed previous records, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $204.6 million five-day debut in 2023.
Disney now claims the top three U.S. box office openings of the year, with Moana 2, Inside Out 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine.
A Record-Breaking Opening Weekend
Disney’s Moana 2 has set a new standard for box office success, earning $221 million domestically over its first five days. The sequel to the 2016 animated hit easily outpaced analysts’ expectations, which predicted an opening between $125 million and $135 million. Globally, the film has already amassed $386 million.
This staggering performance not only breaks the five-day opening record previously held by 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($204.6 million) but also marks the highest Thanksgiving weekend box office in history. It outperformed the original Frozen's $94 million Thanksgiving debut and eclipsed Frozen 2's $125 million during its second weekend in 2019.
Alan Bergman, Disney Entertainment’s co-chairman, expressed excitement over the film’s success, saying, "Moana 2 has far surpassed our high expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that Moana has become."
A Dominant Year for Disney
Disney’s dominance at the box office continues with Moana 2 joining Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine to claim the top three U.S. openings of 2024. The company also noted that its films now account for the top seven Thanksgiving openings and nine of the top 10 of all time.
Competition from Universal’s Wicked
While Moana 2 headlines Disney’s box office success, Universal Pictures’ Wicked, which debuted on November 22, is also performing strongly. The musical adaptation has earned $262 million domestically and $359 million globally, according to Comscore.
Disney’s latest achievements reaffirm its position as a powerhouse in the entertainment industry, with Moana 2 leading the charge in an already stellar year for the studio.
