CDC Reports Rise In New Strain Of Covid-19

The Director of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Rochelle Walensky announced on Wednesday, the 7th of Wednesday, that more younger adults in the 30-40 age group are being admitted to hospitals with severe cases of Covid-19.

In a press briefing on the state of the pandemic, the Director disclosed the availability of data that suggests this happening at a time when health workers are also seeing an increasing rise in variants of the virus, with about 52 areas reporting the new variant strain.

According to scientists, the new variants coming are even more transmittable and deadly, leading to more critical cases of Covid-19. One lol the variants, B.1.1.7 which was first discovered in the United Kingdom and is highly contagious has now spread to the United States and is being dispersed extensively.

At a previous briefing last month, Director Rochelle Walensky cautioned against traveling for spring break, especially in states like Florida where the variant was spreading quickly, as it could trigger an even wider spread.

At the briefing, she said, "I'm pleading with you for the sake of our nation's health. Cases climbed last spring, they climbed again in the summer, they will climb now if we stop taking precautions even when we continue to get more and more people vaccinated."

Variant B.1.1.7 which has spread widely is responsible for over 16,000 cases across 52 areas in the United States. It is said to 50 percent more transmissible than the regular strain of the virus.

Ever since the first case of coronavirus in the United States was reported on the 21st of January 2020 in Washington, over 30.5 million people have been infected. Even with vaccines being rolled out and administered throughout the country, it is still likely to take some time before most Americans have access to vaccination, and the infections, hospitalizations and deaths are expected to increase. There has so far been about 559 thousand deaths in the United States, which are largely due to negligence of former president Donald Trump.
