Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana single-handedly brought electricity to a large part of a village in Africa
Africa houses many of the world’s developing and underdeveloped countries. While some African countries are on the path to attaining full economic stability, many other African countries struggle with economic development, denying them the basics of any economy. These basics include access to electricity, clean water, good roads, among others.
There are still many African countries that struggle with steady electricity supply, as a result, many of the rural areas barely have access to electricity. The Economist reports that Africa is home to nearly a fifth of the world’s population but accounts for less than 4% of global electricity use.
In an attempt to solve this electricity issue, Andre Onana, a Dutch goalkeeper and a Cameroonian by origin took light to his mother’s hometown, Mengueme, Cameroon. The people of Mengueme reportedly have lived in darkness since the community was created. The only form of light they had during the nights were their kerosene lamps, Actu Cameroun reported at the time. Onana funded an electric grid that now provides the residents of Ossoessam with electricity.
According to Actu Cameroun, Onana had made it a point of duty to bring electricity to his mother’s hometown since the start of his football career. He won the hearts of many sports fans with his gesture.
Onana’s football career started at Samuel Eto’o’s academy before moving to Barcelona a decade ago, Face2Face Africa reported. After spending five years at Barcelona Academy, he moved to Ajax, where he is currently the No.1 goalkeeper. His contract with Ajax will terminate this year, but he suggested that he had interest in moving to Paris Saint-Germain next.
