Bill Gates urged the Nigerian government, particularly the Tinubu administration, to demonstrate a much larger financial commitment, placing paramount importance on enhancing primary health systems. Speaking at the forum themed "Advancing Africa: Unleashing the Power of Youth in Science and Innovation," Gates acknowledged Nigeria's abundance of talented individuals with immense potential but cautioned that realizing this potential would prove challenging if the population lacked access to basic necessities.

"It may not surprise you that Nigeria's state and federal governments only spend the equivalent of $10 on health per person each year, compared to $31 in sub-Saharan Africa as a whole," Gates remarked, highlighting the need for leaders to make a substantial financial commitment aimed primarily at improving primary health systems. He stressed the significance of adequately staffing and supplying clinics, ensuring children receive essential vaccines, as these aspects are absolutely crucial for improving health, fostering opportunity, and unlocking Nigeria's full potential.

Agriculture Systems and Persistent Challenges

Bill Gates also expressed his intention to engage in discussions with the government regarding increased commitments to agriculture and digital financial systems. However, he emphasized that Nigerians continue to grapple with numerous unresolved challenges. Recalling his last visit to Nigeria in 2018, Gates addressed government leaders about the country's growth potential. On this occasion, he sought to engage directly with Nigeria's next generation of innovators.

"Ever since I was a teenager, writing computer code on a terminal at my high school, and later at Microsoft, I have loved the feeling of innovating to make something a little better for people or a lot better. I'm sure you know this feeling too. There's going to be a lot of opportunity for you to continue to make a difference in the world because of the unprecedented potential of new technologies," Gates expressed, expressing his faith in the perseverance of Nigeria's youth to enhance lives within and beyond the nation's borders. He acknowledged that economic instability and security threats still afflict Nigeria, underscoring the challenges that must be confronted.

AI and Its Potential for Equitable Outcomes

Bill Gates also highlighted the future application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), envisioning its potential to bring quality healthcare and education to a broader population. He noted that while AI possesses the capacity to save and enhance lives, it is crucial to ensure that profit motives do not dominate its development.

"Our foundation is thinking about what we can do to help AI develop in ways that improve the lives and well-being of everyone, not just the wealthiest people in a few rich countries," Gates explained, outlining the foundation's call for proposals or "Grand Challenge" seeking innovative, safe applications of large language models. With an overwhelming response of 1,300 proposals, half of which originated from Africa, the winners will be announced in Senegal in October. Gates expressed hope that the outcomes of this initiative will contribute to building an evidence base for advancing equitable outcomes in health and development worldwide.
