Addressing the Urgent Food Crisis in Northeastern Nigeria: UN Allocates $20 Million to Tackle Hunger and Malnutrition

In response to the urgent food security and nutrition crisis in northeastern Nigeria, the United Nations has taken swift action by allocating a substantial sum of $20 million. UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq made this announcement in New York on Tuesday, highlighting the critical nature of the situation. This allocation comes in the wake of the recent launch of a comprehensive $2.5 billion Country Strategic Plan (CSP) by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Nigeria, with the aim of tackling the escalating hunger problem in the country.

Allocation of Funds

Underlining the significance of the funding, Farhan Haq explained that a total of $20 million would be donated to support the government-led response efforts across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states. The funds will be sourced from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), which will contribute $9 million, and the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund, which will provide $11 million. The allocated funds will be utilized to address multiple facets of the crisis, including the provision of ready-to-eat food, access to clean water, healthcare, and agricultural support.

While the emergency funding is a crucial step forward, humanitarian partners emphasize the need for additional resources to prevent widespread hunger and malnutrition. The current funding situation remains insufficient, as the $1.3 billion humanitarian response plan for Nigeria is only 26% funded. Urgent action is required to bridge the funding gap and ensure the comprehensive implementation of initiatives aimed at alleviating the dire situation.

Addressing the Crisis in Sudan

In addition to the situation in Nigeria, the United Nations has been actively involved in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has facilitated the transportation of life-saving assistance to various parts of the country, with 388 trucks deployed to deliver aid. This support has reached over 375,000 individuals in North, South, East, and Central Darfur, where people continue to seek refuge from the ongoing conflict. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reports that more than 500,000 people have fled across Sudan's borders to escape the violence. In a positive development, donors have recently announced more than $1.5 billion in support of the humanitarian response in Sudan.
